Why does the West fear China so much?

Could it be because it is a slow rising superpower, on an economic ladder or a divide and rule conquer ie Tibet and Taiwan? Or does the fear have more to do with communism, nationalism, Internationalism, cultural influences or human rights?

As a kid, I read a lot on China and the Chinese concerning history and politics. I was always around Cantonese expatriots (sorry for misspell). Chinese immigrants are friendly for the most part and treat you with utter respect. China has been a dominant power in Asia. It has served as one of the main negotiators of nuclear talks with North Korea and has stood up to America on several occassions while most Asian countries remain stauch allies of U.S. I have never found any reason to be afraid of China. The only complaint I have is that the government in Beijing is overty strict in freedoms. But who am I to preach Democracy like Bush does to the rest of the world?

Why does the West fear China so much?
It is simply because deep inside we know China will raise the 200,000,000 million man army that crosses the river Euphrates at the battle of Armageddon.
Reply:I think that history has proven that we make better allies than enemies...Or could it be an application of:

Keep your friends close...And your enemies closer?

Hmmm...
Reply:It's just like the American situation. The goverment is psycho while the people are friendly. I think it's the communism aspect. I believe we all know what happened at Tiananmen....
Reply:The Chinese government restricts freedom and violates its citizen's civil rights without thought or reason. It is a huge country with a powerful military, and consists of over a billion people. It is a growing economic power and is requiring more and more natural resources. The West fears that China, if it wanted, could cause instability in Asia - if it went to war over Taiwan for example, the West fears loss of jobs to cheap Chinese labor, and they fear that China will consume oil and gas, thus making it more expensive for the West.
Reply:yea right
Reply:I learned in 5th class in primary school that the West considered China as the 'Sleeping Bear' and would eventually become the world's super power. It all seemed like a fairytale back then but I believe that it will overtake any of the other nations in the not too distant future.
Reply:This is an excellent question and you have already stated several possible answers. I believe that we fear China's unlimited manpower and its rising industrialization. China has huge investments in the US and we owe them billions. If they ever make a demand for payment, we are dead in the water. It is only a matter of time before they flex their muscles and power passes from the US to China.
Reply:Since when does the Westfear China, that is the biggest laugh of the day. One thing that you and other people do not realize is that China looks up to the US, especially after WWII.
Reply:This fear is rather common when ever a super power rivals that of ours such as the USSR. You have to remember that China and the US profit greatly through the trade committed by both parties. With China recent entry into the WTO this is more that ever. So by China demanding the debt immediately, China would lose more in trade then they would gain in debt. Although there are issues that both sides cannot agree on such as Tawain or Human Rights, but ultimately we and China gain more economically by remaining allies.
Reply:What West? China doesn't scare me.
Reply:China who? Don't fear them, don't care.
Reply:Do they? I hadn't noticed. Hmmm, maybe the ABC news isn't doing the job I thought they were.
Reply:Your premise is wrong. The USA does not fear China.
Reply:because it's 500 million to one. and we also need all of their dollar-store junk
Reply:Maybe it is because they don't know what's in the food.
Reply:I heard that China is forming an alliance with Mexico to provide the jobs that Mexico needs and the workforce that China needs. Maybe it will be the Americans that end up smuggling into Mexico to find jobs! LOL

China is still on their way up.

How many of us can now truthfully say that we're better off than we were a few years ago? Not me, that's for sure. I make more money but it takes more than the increase can float to keep a semblence of the same standard of living as I had a few years ago.

Back in 1971 one member of a family unit could work full-time and make the same standard of living as it takes for two people working full time jobs plus one (or both of them) moonlighting part time jobs today.

Here I see people working for the same wages that I made back in 1977 and trying to make it on that to provide for their families. (ADULTS, not just "kids that live with M%26amp;D")

Everything else has gone up in price all around them. Their means has been stretched to the limit and beyond. I already know of people that have had to quit their jobs because they can't afford to drive to them anymore. Now they go around trying to do odd jobs for people for whatever money people will pay them.

The time is ripe for America to stop looking down their noses at other countries. This is a great country to live in, but I see people every day that are struggling all that they can, but sliding deeper in the hole.

In other words, Don't underestimate China or other countries like we're just so much better than they are.
Reply:The West knows who to punk and whom they will get punked by...China is the truth
Reply:Well, let's see......it's a rather LARGE country and if their philosophies are different from ours, and if those philosophies happen to involve nuclear arms or the such, I think that it would be wise to consider the fact that they may not dig us and if that were the case, at the very least we should consider keeping an eye on them.We do not live in ancient times. Not a single nation on this earth can avoid to ignore other countries and their policies. If you think this is silly, you are either very young or a LIberal.
Reply:They fear anyone who might be stronger than them.

This is natural.
Reply:The rest of the world doesn't fear china, but they know that in a few yrs china will be technologically equiped, then we need to be worried, so much man power due to population their.
Reply:I would think of the size of the populous that would dictate a number of troops that would make the mightiest nation second guess... Add in the possibilities of nuclear threat and no regard to use such. Then you have the unknown factor, but then again who knows what secrets lie within that dormant power and how explosive will that power be if awakened
