So China is going to find scapegoats to pin the death toll on?

Shouldn't they be looking to their own government inspectors and regulations. Not the contractors. Especially in the schools, they are a government institution.

Executing people for natures fury.

I have lived in China five years and have taught in village schools. Most of them would fall down if you kicked them. The government is responsible - they take the credit when something good happens here and deserve the blame when something bad happens since they control everything that can be controlled. What happens is that the smaller cities and the poor villages bear the brunt of their arcane policies.

Chengdu has 11 million people -there were 14 deaths there.

Mianyang has about 1% of the population of Chengdu. The total deaths in Mianyang will top 10,000.

Mianyang is poor and small and NOT a provincial capital.

Chengdu is big and a PROVINCIAL capital 9meaning the government officials live there) and has lots of money and enforces the codes (which Mianyang can't afford to do and is ignored by the government because they don't care about their small cities and villages).

That is the story.
Reply:Regulation happen over time, In England we have been updating regulations since the beginning of the industrial revolution, China, only for the last 20yrs or so.

After this tragic disaster, I'm sure a lot more new legislation will come into force, its the way of the world.

As for executing the engineers/builders, don't believe everything you read.

Yeah so China has the death penalty, doesn't your country?

Do you have proof of these executions?
Reply:Yes I agree the ones who inspected the construction should be held accountable as well as the ones who did the developing if it was built below government standards. Although I disagree to a death sentence for it. But surely stiff fines to compensate the families for there losses, and prison time should be given.
Reply:However i think that most of the world would agree that Chinas internal response to the disaster has been excellent.
Reply:Building Contractors should be held accountable by the law just as they would be held here in the US and Europe. I'm sure the Chinese will act to impose higher construction standards on the contractors who built the schools and hospitals and residential buildings that collapsed. They are evolving into an open society and they face massive problems as they do so. We have our own problems to deal with---like an aging transportation system and the built-in inefficiencies in our infrastructure. Remember New Orleans and the failed levee's and that bridge collapse in Minnesota!
