CHENGDU, China — The death toll from the massive earthquake in southwest China could rise to more than 50,000, Chinese state media reported Thursday.
At least three dozen villages and towns in southwest China were still cut off from rescuers as tens of thousands of soldiers and emergency workers struggled against impassable roads and barriers of concrete and brick to reach the 40,000 people officials say are still buried in the rubble or missing after Monday’s earthquake.
With the number of people so far officially confirmed dead raised to more than 19,500, and expected to jump further, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao dispatched at least an additional 90 helicopters to the quake-battered Sichuan Province, which suffered most of the damage from Monday’s earthquake, and made a national plea for heavy equipment and simple tools like hammers and shovels.
Local officials in Sichuan also issued a radio appeal for food, water and heavy machinery, warning that a looming humanitarian crisis threatened thousands of survivors who have little access to fresh supplies, clean water and shelter.
On Thursday afternoon, officials from the largest Chinese power company warned that two dams were at risk of crumbling, threatening more than 100 people still trapped in the ruins of a hydropower plant in the town of Huaneng.
The dam, officials said on state-run television, could collapse “at any time.”
As a series of aftershocks rattled the area, officials warned that an additional 391 dams were in “dangerous condition,” posing an imminent risk to thousands of people downstream, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.
A report in the Beijing Times said that a dam along the Jian River in Beichuan County was also in a fragile state.
“There are major safety issues right now with the reservoirs, hydropower stations and lakes in the earthquake zone,” Chen Lei, a government minister, said in the statement on the agency’s Web site.
“The area has numerous reservoirs and lots of damage, and the extent of the danger is unknown,” the statement said.
Overall, officials said that more than half of the region’s 20 million people have been affected by the earthquake, which struck on Monday afternoon with a magnitude of 7.9.
Officials raised the number of injured to more than 102,000, Xinhua reported. On Wednesday, officials estimated more than 1,600 of the injured were in serious condition.
Relief experts said that time was quickly running out for those still buried in the rubble of collapsed buildings, including hundreds of students and teachers trapped in several schools throughout the region.
For the first time since the earthquake struck, rescue workers cleared a major road leading into the hard-hit area around Shifang, enabling heavy equipment to gain access. The Associated Press reported that soldiers in Shifang could be seen bundling bodies in white sheets and burying them in a mass grave sprinkled with lime.
Officials said that more than 130,000 emergency personnel, including soldiers and medics, were working in the quake zone. The government also said that it planned to send 1,300 rail cars with supplies to the region.
The state media also reported on Thursday that 33 tourists from France, Britain and the United States had been airlifted by helicopter from the Wolong nature preserve, which is home to more than 100 pandas. Tourist officials said that an additional 2,500 tourists, including 682 foreign residents, would soon be evacuated from the region.
China asked Japan to send rescue workers and also gave approval for a contingent of quake-relief experts from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Taiwan’s largest private carrier, China Airlines, was given permission to ferry relief supplies on charter flights.
“Time is life,” Mr. Wen, the prime minister, told survivors during a visit to Beichuan on Wednesday. “This is very important to let them know rescuers are trying to save them.”
Until now, the authorities have been reluctant to allow international aid workers into the quake zone, which is home to several military installations and China’s nuclear-weapons design program. On Wednesday, officials declined an offer of help from the Australian government.
Kate Janis, program director for Mercy Corps, an American organization that has personnel in Chengdu, the provincial capital, said she had been impressed by the relief efforts so far. “It definitely appears to be a no-holds- barred effort, all hands on deck,” she said.
Edward Wong reported from Chengdu, and John Schwartz from New York. Reporting was contributed by Andrew Jacobs from Beijing, Jake Hooker and Alan Chin from Hanwang, Gilles Sabrie from Beichuan, and Bill Broad from New York.
Please look at my detail, u will understand y i ask this question, please help!?

As an Overseas Chinese, I do not have that opportunity to read more about?
China history but one thing I know is, no China no me. All I know about China is she came a long way and had faced many "waves" dynasty after dynasty until dying under the Ching Dynasty. Opium War, Territorial /Zone that even Chinese can't move freely in China, Expensive and precious antics being smuggled out or stolen that now China pay hefty price to get them back! Then the Mao period and the close door policy...and now China finally rise and try to catch up with the world!
Hey look, those people who once indirectly contributed to the downfall of China, just can't stopped condemning China? I wonder how they feel for doing so..happy, jealous or WHAT?
For those who are good in history...PLS correct me if I am wrong OR Pls contribute if you got extra to input..tks

What are you doing about higher food prices? What is your strategy to stretch your food budget?
Rice prices have more than tripled in less than a year, and in China they rose another 50% in the past month. Price of a bushel of wheat quintupled since last year. So what are you doing, faced with higher prices at the grocery store? Changing the way you purchase food? Where you shop? Exchanging processed foods for unprocessed (buying whole chicken instead of chicken nuggets, etc)? Reducing consumption? Reducing snacks and "junk food"? Reducing waste? Or what?
What are you doing about higher food prices? What is your strategy to stretch your food budget?
My shopping bill has been the same for 10 years - we eat fresh food everyday and I always use everything up. Lidl often offer half price veg - sometimes I buy direct from a farm shop and I occasionally buy i get one free.
Reply:I've started to buy budget brands of stuff - some of it's OK - it's a case of trial %26amp; error. I've also started cooking more stuff from scratch %26amp; eating less meat. I've always baked so I do this anyway buscuits, cakes, brownies %26amp; snacks for the kids.
I do get some fruit %26amp; veg from Aldi / Lidl. Generally I'm more conscious of what stuff costs %26amp; how much I spend - I look out for special offers.
Reply:I'm just going to buy less junk food, less processed food. I don't need someone to make a dinner, freeze it, and package it for me -- I can boil noodles %26amp; add some chicken %26amp; veggies myself. I'll also buy stuff when it's on sale - stock up on dried or canned foods when they are one sale... but I refuse to join one of those stores like Sams Club or Costco - seems like a waste to pay money to spend money.
Reply:I used to grocery shop 3-4 times a week (I like stuff really fresh),but cut down to 1-2 times a week - because I spend more when I go more times.... I don't buy alot of processed/ pre-packaged foods anyways.......
Reply:food prices are not going to stop going up and up and up. the first thing that one should do is not waste any food and buy very wisely. here are a few rules: while shopping do not buy on "impulse". make a shopping list of what you need for the week or the month. say good by for ever to junk food which actually cost a fortune. you will be on the way to healthier eating habits. avoid little expensive trimmings such as fresh basil in December (usually 1.99 and up for a few leaves on the death row...) or items which are not in season. do not , i repeat do not buy soft drink or bottles water or any designer soft drinks, they cost nothing to produce and are so ridiculously expensive! you will also have a lot more room in your fridge. instead install a water filter and fill some bottle as you need them. to replace soft drink, be creative... club soda with a splash of orange and cranberries juice will be very refreshing and if you do not find it sweet enough add one or two packets of splenda. buy seasonal fruit and produce. learn how to cook simple and healthy meals. here is an example: two filet Mignon ( between 8 to 10oz) at Costco will cost you about $20, two sweet bake potatoes $2,a large bag of spinach to saute for two $3, and a fruit smoothie for dessert with fat free generic yogurt, frozen strawberries, one apple and ice about$1.25 for two. your filet Mignon dinner will cost you about $27 for two. this top quality meal would have cost you between $ 70 and $90 in a good restaurant without tip for two!!! as far as snack the best one for me is a protein drink with fruit. you can produce great meals for an average of ten to fifteen dollars per person without eating pasta every night.i believe you still can eat well without spending a fortune using a bit of your brain... i do. ( more ideas later on...)

What is the expected direction of the global economy and specifically the big economies like USA, Japan, China
Everyone is saying how well the whole is doing despite the geo political situation, the inflationary pressure, the rise in commodities prices, especially oil, natural disaster and the potential of disease outbreaks. What is actually happening to the economies of the world? Equities are so volatile, even fixed income instruments are unstable and currencies are swinging up and down. So where are we really going up or down? How to safe guard our assets and to have our wealth grow so that we can retire peacefully.
What is the expected direction of the global economy and specifically the big economies like USA, Japan, China
I do hate to burst the Chinese Gravy-Train Theory of economical relativism but the Chinese economy is going into the shredder within the next five years.
You don't have to believe me. MSN Money's top stockpicker, Jim Jubak lays it all out for you in plain, simple English. For a real education on the direction of the Chinese economy and its impact on the West, I would urge you to read his articles on MSN Money.
Basically, it is like this:
The Chinese have corrupt regional (state central...) banks that are under tremendous pressure to perform and, ironically, show a profit to the government in Beijing. As of July 2006, these banks have already loaned out more than two-thirds (and by some estimates, even more...) of their money and the year is only half over-. These loans are to the tune of One Trillion (with a T...) dollars so far this year. Some American economists recon that as much as 65% of these loans will not be paid back. (More on why in just a sec...)
The bankers are on the take from local businessmen, the businessmen get cheap loans and there is a whole lot of back-scratching going on. All this to the chagrin of rice farmers, whose land is being confiscated by these businessmen with the "eminent domain" idea being applied liberally. There have been numerous local uprisings involving farmers and government thugs...one humorous story that relates how these farmers trapped the thugs in their brand-new hotel using pitchforks, scythes and knives.
Now, it would be wonderful if these loans were being utilised to construct low-income housing, water and electrical infrastructure and roads but they're not. About half of these loans are being used to build luxury condominiums that most local people cannot afford, up-scale and American-style shopping malls featuring high-end American clothes (made in China, by the way...).
The other half of the loans are being made to manufacturers who already have existing plants, most notably in the steel industry. The operators of these steel plants are also under tremendous pressure from the government, which has decreed that no old-school steel plants will remain after 2010. In order to keep their jobs and the jobs of their local workers, they have borrowed excessive amounts to modernise their facilities. The result of these projects is that the national capacity for steel manufacture has nearly doubled, thus dropping the price of steel on the open market, which- you guessed it- depresses the income of the steel plant that was just built. Basically, these industrious Chinese workers are making steel for free so they can put rice on the table- provided that the local rice farmer has not been put out of business.
There are many, many other reasons that the Chinese economy will tank, especially as they regard demographics. I won't go into it here but you can read the truth in Mr. Jubak's articles. The research is clear and concise and will put these ideas into a broader and more informed context for you.
Their economy is like a Taepodong II missile on the launchpad. It looks pretty going up and up and up, until it crumbles into thin air.
Rest assured that when the Chinese economy falls, there will be a giant sucking sound in the world economy that has not been heard for many years. It won't be for a few a while yet but you should get ready now.
Reply:Both Frank and Stockpicker2010 have good arguments and I have heard both sides of the same argument from other people. That is a moot point and only time will tell what is going to happen with China.
The primary concern is the global economy. My belief is that the global economy is headed for a major upheaval. Why? Well, with the exception of a few countries, the primary driving force behind the global economy in the past several years has been monetary liquidity. Japan alone issued sum 73 trillion Yen (not sure of the exact figure) along with Zero interest rates, caused the Yen carry trade to flourish. The U.S. is in the same situation as driving the U.S. economy with monetary liquidity and not productivity. Did you notice that in March 2006, the Fed is no longer reporting M3 figures? I believe it's to mask their money printing activity.
Add to that that the U.S. dollar is the world's reserve currency and that dollar is not looking healthy at all. I believe it's a matter of time before we see a dollar collapse and how do you think the world economy will fair in a dollar collapse scenario? I'm not saying every country in the world is going to sink, but a dollar collapse would be catastrophic to the global economy.
You said it yourself, everyone is saying that things are find, but as you look around, you see that things are not what people are claiming it to be. You have taken the first step in looking and researching for yourself and using your own brain and not listening to what others are saying - good for you.
One thing I found out is that the crowd is almost always wrong. Sure, there are times when they are right and things are going the way the masses say they are, but that is generally short lived. If you read the book, "Extraordinary Popular Delusion and the Madness of Crowds" by Charles Mackay, you can see how the masses believed everything was just fine, while the few souls who warned that things were not were riddiculed and denounced.
The bible say that people will be saying all is well, that there is peace and tranquility and then certain destruction comes upon them.
If someone comes to work and they look like their sick (red eyes, droopy likes like their tired, coughing, sneezing, etc.) and they say they're fine - sure, they may SAY they're fine, but what does your observations tell you? People are saying the world economy is find, but what do the symptoms tell you? If the symptoms are telling you things are not what they appear, that is a good indication that things are not as good as they appear.
In my opinion, the world economy is about to tank. When? Who knows, we just have to watch and wait.

Reply:I almost laugh at your question, though I know you are serious. The US economy is going down and will no longer be the international monetary standard, as the US refuses to acknowledge outsourcing as a defeatist move, increasing labor costs and general inflation. Japan already owns about 100 % of the major buildings in Hawaii, bans US imports by some very cunning ways, and has picked up the title to about 75% of the titles to buildings in Los Angeles...they play for high stakes...Americans do not understand their ways of thinking. However, China will be the dominant economic factor within 15 years...even predicted by the CIA...work ethics are strong and being a 'communist country', I have never seen such devotion to the companies as I have here...work days are as long as the employee feels able...usually 10 to 15 hours (no overtime) they want to succeed....post offices and banks work 7 days a week...there are more cars on the roads every day....the company I work for is international now (in China), and English is mandatory for the workers...so they can increase their competiveness...Teachers, Doctors, and kids spend their leisure time preparing for another exam...they want to be the best of the best....that is the main factor in driving the economy. However the US workers have lost the zeal....take a newspaper to work as they have lots of slack time and are clock-watchers. I am a white American but raised in Hong Kong and I see a big difference in the attitudes. In Asia, we do not look for who is to blame but how to fix the problem. Look at Hurricane Katrina, there is still squabbles over who should have done what....here we fix the problem and move on.....so where is the economic future?
Reply:in the short run, global economies will grow slow..that's why you need to diversify.

I have a Bob Dylan album from 1961 made in China. What is it worth??
the album has these songs:You're no good
Talkin' New York
Gospel plow
House of the rising sun
Highway 51
and more...
I have a Bob Dylan album from 1961 made in China. What is it worth??
It sounds like the debut album called "Bob Dylan." If it's that and the normal American release, it's probably worth a fair amount but nothing amazing, unless it's some oddity with Chinese writing on it. Got a picture of it?

What is the name of the breed of Horse from China ?
It is an old Chinese breed of Horse that is on the rise again, it sounds like Prizelsky or Brizalsky....It is only 1m tall...
What is the name of the breed of Horse from China ?
Przewalski's Horse
Their natural habitat is in Mongolia.
Their typical height is about 13 hands (1.32 m), length is about 2.1 m
Poliakov, who concluded that the animal was a wild horse species, gave it the official name Equus przewalskii (Poliakov 1881). However, authorities differ about the correct classification. Some hold it is a separate species, the last remnant of the wild horse Equus ferus, others hold it is a subspecies of Equus caballus
In 1992, sixteen horses were released into the wild in Mongolia, followed by additional animals later on. These reintroduced horses successfully reproduced, and the status of the animal was changed from "extinct in the wild" to "endangered" in 2005.[1] However, they are classified as "extinct in the wild" by the IUCN Red List, as they have not been reassessed since 1996. [6]
Reply:Przewalski's horse
Przewalski's horse , wild horse of Asia, Equus przewalski, E. ferus przewalski, or E. caballus przewalski, the only extant wild horse that, in the purebred state, is not descended from the domestic horse. Smaller than most domestic horses, it has a large head and bulging forehead. It is dun-colored, with an upright crest of dark hair on its head and neck, a dark stripe along the backbone, and a dark, plumed tail. Przewalski's horse can interbreed with the domestic horse, and some authorities regard it as a subspecies of the domestic horse ( E. caballus ), although it has a different number of chromosomes. Because interbreeding with Mongol horses may have begun centuries ago, it is possible that even the original specimens of Przewalski's horse to be described were actually of mixed descent. The animal's former range probably extended from W Mongolia to N Xinjiang, China.
The horse was first recognized as a separate species by Nikolai Mikhailovich Przhevalsky , a Russian explorer and geographer, in the 1870s. In the 1960s the horse became extinct in the wild, largely due to competition with domestic livestock for grazing land and water and to hunting for horsemeat, but many specimens survived in zoos, where they breed well. Beginning in 1992, the horse was reintroduced to several locations in Mongolia and Kazakhstan using animals bred in European zoos.
Tarpan is the name for members of another race of the same species, E. ferus gmelini or E. caballus gmelini, which formerly ranged over the steppes of E Europe and W Asia, but has been extinct since the last century. Attempts have been made to breed back a tarpan-like horse from domestic horses believed to have been interbred with tarpans.
Wild horses are classified in the phylum Chordata , subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Perissodactyla, family Equidae.
