From a non-biased, non-patriotic point of view, do you feel that the USA will remain the super-power for another 20+ years? With the likes of China forever rising to power in both economic and military might, and the likes of the European Union and their currency the Euro constantly rising far above the dollar, do you think the USA will last?
Will the USA remain the economic superpower?
It's unlikely. On a per capita basis, we're only 9th in the world, with several countries already richer than us. The root cause, tho, of America's developing economic decline is debt. We have far too much of it. Americans owe too much money, saving and investing far too little. America has a massive national debt to the rest of the world, and has made entitlement promises to Americans -- Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security -- which have the entire country well on the road to functional insolvency. Debt is suffocating.
All of these factors are weighing on the US Dollar. Right now, America accounts for more than 1/4 of global GDP, which is why many people think it will last 'forever'. But the dollar, which is weak, weakening, and set to weaken *a LOT* further, is what will ultimately bring all these accounts due. As it weakens, our share of global GDP declines. The weak dollar also makes it much more expensive to import goods, and since we import the vast majority of the things we need, both nationally and individually, this means a lot of inflation in future.
Beyond our current share of GDP, the OTHER reason people usually cite for America's 'permanent' global superpower status is our military. But imagine a world -- not difficult to do -- where the dollar is so much weaker, making oil SO expensive that we can no longer fuel a military capable of projecting power.
That's where we're headed. America is, sadly, in the middle of a long term economic decline. Economic decline begets military decline. This is what happened to Greece, to Rome, to the Ottomans, to the French, the Spanish, the English. If history teaches anything, it's that it repeats. Nothing is certain except change.

Reply:My personal feeling is that we won't last much longer as the world's economic power. I think the major reason why is because of a lot of our social issues. I feel like, on average, the children are getting lazier, families are breaking apart, and these factors added to several others are breaking down our society. We will always have some of the brightest and most innovative people in the world, but I see that number decreasing in the future.
I'm in a graduate economics program, and I have to tell you that I am amazed at the ratio of Chinese and Indian (not Native American) students to American students. It's at least 10:1. These kids are so motivated to succeed and work so hard. I don't see the same thing from the American students. I realize that my school is a small sample, but I've lived in California, the Mountain West, and now New York and have encountered the same thing from coast to coast. Sorry about the rant!

while China's economy and development has superceded that of any developed western nation in the past 25 years, with the only social unrest being that of Tiananmen. Whilst the USA has had over 200 years to achieve a stable society, yet you are also 1 trillion$ in debt with the Communist Party of China, yet uphold a communist Cuban arms embargo, and have 1/6th of its pop'ln living on or below the subsistent level (and with no healthcare at all?) What kind of model are you? Your government loves throwing around words like 'freedom' and 'democracy', yet, domestically, you execute more people per pop'ln than ANY other country, you have mass murders/school shootings, your phone lines and e-mails are being tapped, and your government has convinced many young Americans to die for an unjust cause....

But if your making $500 an hour and get a $10 raise, you only received a 2% increase.
So of course China's growth numbers look good, they started out so far down, any improvement at all, sounds huge.
But China's Per captia GDP is still 109th in the world.

China currently holds one trillion dollars in Bonds, our annual payment on those bonds is about $75 billion. China's defense budget is about $150 billion (that can do more due to lower wages and costs). So we are paying for half of China's military build up. Helping to arm and create our next enemy.

On Thursday afternoon, officials from the largest Chinese power company warned that two dams were at risk of crumbling, threatening more than 100 people still trapped in the ruins of a hydropower plant in the town of Huaneng.
The dam, officials said on state-run television, could collapse “at any time.”
As a series of aftershocks rattled the area, officials warned that an additional 391 dams were in “dangerous condition,” posing an imminent risk to thousands of people downstream, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.
A report in the Beijing Times said that a dam along the Jian River in Beichuan County was also in a fragile state.
“There are major safety issues right now with the reservoirs, hydropower stations and lakes in the earthquake zone,” Chen Lei, a government minister, said in the statement on the agency’s Web site.
“The area has numerous reservoirs and lots of damage, and the extent of the danger is unknown,” the statement said.
Overall, officials said that more than half of the region’s 20 million people have been affected by the earthquake, which struck on Monday afternoon with a magnitude of 7.9.
Officials raised the number of injured to more than 102,000, Xinhua reported. On Wednesday, officials estimated more than 1,600 of the injured were in serious condition.
Relief experts said that time was quickly running out for those still buried in the rubble of collapsed buildings, including hundreds of students and teachers trapped in several schools throughout the region.
For the first time since the earthquake struck, rescue workers cleared a major road leading into the hard-hit area around Shifang, enabling heavy equipment to gain access. The Associated Press reported that soldiers in Shifang could be seen bundling bodies in white sheets and burying them in a mass grave sprinkled with lime.
Officials said that more than 130,000 emergency personnel, including soldiers and medics, were working in the quake zone. The government also said that it planned to send 1,300 rail cars with supplies to the region.
The state media also reported on Thursday that 33 tourists from France, Britain and the United States had been airlifted by helicopter from the Wolong nature preserve, which is home to more than 100 pandas. China asked Japan to send rescue workers and also gave approval for a contingent of quake-relief experts from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Taiwan’s largest private carrier, China Airlines, was given permission to ferry relief supplies on charter flights.

China history but one thing I know is, no China no me. All I know about China is she came a long way and had faced many "waves" dynasty after dynasty until dying under the Ching Dynasty. Opium War, Territorial /Zone that even Chinese can't move freely in China, Expensive and precious antics being smuggled out or stolen that now China pay hefty price to get them back! Then the Mao period and the close door policy...and now China finally rise and try to catch up with the world!

What are you doing about higher food prices? What is your strategy to stretch your food budget?
Rice prices have more than tripled in less than a year, and in China they rose another 50% in the past month. Price of a bushel of wheat quintupled since last year. So what are you doing, faced with higher prices at the grocery store? Changing the way you purchase food? Where you shop? Exchanging processed foods for unprocessed (buying whole chicken instead of chicken nuggets, etc)? Reducing consumption? Reducing snacks and "junk food"? Reducing waste? Or what?

My shopping bill has been the same for 10 years - we eat fresh food everyday and I always use everything up. Lidl often offer half price veg - sometimes I buy direct from a farm shop and I occasionally buy i get one free.
Reply:I've started to buy budget brands of stuff - some of it's OK - it's a case of trial %26amp; error. I've also started cooking more stuff from scratch %26amp; eating less meat. I've always baked so I do this anyway buscuits,cakes,brownies %26amp; snacks for the kids.
I do get some fruit %26amp; veg from Aldi / Lidl. Generally I'm more conscious of what stuff costs %26amp; how much I spend - I look out for special offers.

I don't need someone to make a dinner, freeze it, and package it for me -- I can boil noodles %26amp; add some chicken %26amp; veggies myself. I'll also buy stuff when it's on sale - stock up on dried or canned foods when they are one sale... but I refuse to join one of those stores like Sams Club or Costco - seems like a waste to pay money to spend money.
Reply:I used to grocery shop 3-4 times a week (I like stuff really fresh),but cut down to 1-2 times a week - because I spend more when I go more times.... I don't buy alot of processed/ pre-packaged foods anyways.......
Reply:food prices are not going to stop going up and up and up. the first thing that one should do is not waste any food and buy very wisely. here are a few rules: while shopping do not buy on "impulse". make a shopping list of what you need for the week or the month. say good by for ever to junk food which actually cost a fortune. you will be on the way to healthier eating habits. avoid little expensive trimmings such as fresh basil in December (usually 1.99 and up for a few leaves on the death row...) or items which are not in season. do not , i repeat do not buy soft drink or bottles water or any designer soft drinks, they cost nothing to produce and are so ridiculously expensive! you will also have a lot more room in your fridge. instead install a water filter and fill some bottle as you need them. to replace soft drink, be creative... club soda with a splash of orange and cranberries juice will be very refreshing and if you do not find it sweet enough add one or two packets of splenda. buy seasonal fruit and produce. learn how to cook simple and healthy meals. here is an example: two filet Mignon ( between 8 to 10oz) at Costco will cost you about $20, two sweet bake potatoes $2,a large bag of spinach to saute for two $3, and a fruit smoothie for dessert with fat free generic yogurt, frozen strawberries, one apple and ice about$1.25 for two. your filet Mignon dinner will cost you about $27 for two. this top quality meal would have cost you between $ 70 and $90 in a good restaurant without tip for two!!! as far as snack the best one for me is a protein drink with fruit. you can produce great meals for an average of ten to fifteen dollars per person without eating pasta every night.i believe you still can eat well without spending a fortune using a bit of your brain... i do. ( more ideas later on...)
